What’s it about?

A moving story of environmental campaigning, music, reluctant
romance and finding your place in life.

● Set in 1989, and filled with the music, office life, attitudes and
emerging environmentalism of the time.

It’s 1989: Two young people are struggling to find themselves and a role in life. For one, the world is changing too quickly. For the other, change can’t come soon enough. Linking them are overgrown railway sidings – home to wildlife but about to be destroyed by developers.

Jill Standing is mocked because of her name, ignored because of the way she looks and dismissed because of her views ‘wacky’ views on the environment.

Harry Pratt is mired in traditions foisted on him by his father. His interests are vintage jukeboxes, creating Christmas cracker jokes and his boss, Sarah

Both want to preserve the sidings, but for different reasons. Campaigning against a big business, a shared love of Blondie and a reclusive, retired school-teacher transforms their lives.

What readers are saying

‘The author’s background in cinema comes through in his writing, as I could visualise each scene in my mind (Simon Pegg would make a great Harry!) and the music references provided the soundtrack. I really felt as though I was back in the late 80s, alongside the characters.

A moving story about finding passion in life and love with a music theme recommended for fans of Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, Juliet Naked) and Daisy Jones and the Six.’ (NetGalley)

‘It’s full of wonderful characters, friendship and community, with a teeny bit of romance added in.

Packed with musical nostalgia, the story really weasels its way into your heart.’ (Web review)
